A  language developed from 17th Dutch settlers of South Africa.  Or combination of Dutch, French, and German.

An Afrikaans-speaking descendant of the Dutch settlers of South America.

II.
  South Africa : A Glance.

∧ Two persons holding the Cullinan Diamond, the largest in the world.

   National Flag of South Africa.

Tail section of South African Airways Plane.

In recent times certain unofficial explanations have been suggested for the meaning of the National flag's colours. In one optimistic explanation, the pall (Y) is stated to symbolise the convergence as one unified nation, the blue represents the sky and the two oceans that surround the country, the green symbolises the farms and natural environment that are an essential part of South Africa, the yellow stands for the natural resources of South Africa, particularly gold, the black represents black South Africans, doubling as a symbol of belonging with the rest of Africa, and the white represents white South Africans, doubling as a symbol of peace. In onerather pessimistic explanation, the yellow represents an electric fence(Wikipedia).

South Africa: A Glance.

South Africa is diverse.  The country has 3 capitals:   Tshwane (formerly Pretoria, administrative capital), Bloemfontein (seat of high court) &  Cape Town (seat of parliament).  Other big cities are Johannesburg, Durban, and Port Elizabeth.  There are 11 official Languages : English, *Afrikaans, South Sotho, Xhosa, & Zulu are most frequently  used.

Diverse Races: Its population is about 47.4 million: 80% of Bantu origin; 12% white(60% **Afrikaners & the remainder of British descent); 7% 'colored'(i.e. mixed race), and Indian(1%).  Zulu are the largest group (10 Million), followed by the Xhosa  (8 million). Cape Muslims are South Africans of long standing.  Although  many Muslims were brought to the early Cape Colony as slaves, others were political prisoners from the Dutch East Indies.

South Africa has experienced a different history from other nations in Africa as a result of two facts. Firstly, early immigration from Europe that started shortly after the Dutch East India Company founded a station at Cape Town in 1652. Early and later European interest followed from the second fact, the strategic importance of the Cape Sea Route. The country's relatively developed infrastructure made its mineral wealth available and important to Western interests, particularly throughout the late nineteenth century. The Cullinan Diamond found in Cullinan, Gauteng, South Africa, on January 26, 1905, is the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found, at 3, 106.75 carats (621.35 g).  The stone was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine.

There is high un-employment: 25-29% in city, and 40% in township(where blacks are majority) while there is a construction boom.  Jobs are available, but many are either not skilled or uneducated.  There are many illegal immigrants from other countries.  Meanwhile, whites keep emigrating.  The gaps between South Africa's privileged and its poor is widening.  The African independent churches have a large following, as their approach includes aspects of tribal mysticism, and firm belief in the influence of ancestral spirits.  As mentioned, South Africa has many HIV/AIDS.  Free anti-retroviral drugs are available under a state-funded scheme.

Miscellaneous: Names are changed as in the case of Pretoria to Tswane, and new names are added.  $1 = 7 Rand.  Annually, there has been 16% increase in the number of tourists. They have 3 Nobel Prize Winners : Nadine Gordimer in 1991 in Literature.  Nelson Mandela and Tutu for Peace.  We flew from New York (JFK); Non-stop to Dakar, capital of Senegal, to Johannesburg.  It took 16-18 hours by air from U.S. to Johannesburg.  6 hour time difference. I believe that future of South Africa is bright, considering 'mineral sources', 'wide agricultural land', and 'pursuits of high education' among the people.
