나미비아라는 나라에는 지구상에서 가장 건조한 Namib사막이 있고, 황폐한 기후 관계로 사람들이 많이 살고 있지 않습니다. 총인구 200만(2 million)중에 약 10%가 코이산 (KhoiSan, 또는 bushmen)부족들이기도 합니다. 1890년에 독일의 식민지이다가, 세계 제 1 차 전쟁종료 후에는 남아공의 식민지 (그 당시에는 South West Africa로 알려짐)이다가, 1990년에 독립을 하기에 이르렀습니다. 치안은 대단히 안전합니다. 광물자원이 풍부합니다.

There live only 2 million people in the country, mainly due to its desert weather. About 10% are KhoiSan tribes (San people are 'bushmen'). In 1890, it was annexed to Germany. At the end of the World War I, the country, then known South West Africa, was ruled by South Africa. In 1990, independence was granted. The country is rich in resources.
We visited a small Namibian Village, named Impalila Village, for half a day. We crossed the Chobe River on a boat. Saw many birds, but few animals. There live only 79 peoples. At the age 14, they should sleep outside house, while eating at home. If girls get pregnant before marriage, boy should pay penalty, 18 cows to the girl's parents. They should pay for the education. They use nature toilets.

보추와나 (Botswana)는 땅덩어리가 크고 건조한 나라인데, 풍부한 광물자원, 특히 다이아몬드를 갖고 있습니다. 약 30,000년 전에 '산' 이라는 부족(bushmen)이 정착한 곳이기도 합니다. 1885년에 영국의 보호 하에 있게 되었다가, 1966년에 독립을 얻어서 지금에 이르고 있습니다. 범죄율도 매우 낮고, 경제적으로, 정치적으로 안정되어 있습니다. 이 나라의 화폐의 단위는 'pula'인데 이는 '비'를 의미하고, 1 pula는 100 'thebe'인데 thebe는 '빗방울'을 의미합니다. 건조한 사막지방에 살며 비가 오기를 몹시도 바라고 있는 것 같습니다. 나라의 인구는 약 1.8 백만으로, 이 나라전체에는 2 cm 두께의 전화번호부가 하나밖에 없습니다.
이 나라에서는 쵸베 국립공원(북동쪽의 일부)을 다녀왔습니다. 쵸베 강을 따라 배를 타고 관광할 수 있었고, 또한 4륜 자동차를 타고, 아침 6시 그리고 아침 10시에 사파리를 하며 동물들을 구경하였습니다. 이 공원에서 가장 장관으로 꼽히는 것은 세계에서 가장 많은 코끼리 떼를 봅니다. 코끼리 외에도 다양한 포유동물, 많은 조류가 서식합니다. 이 국립공원을 흐르는 쵸베 강에서 공원의 이름이 유래되었습니다.
Botswana is a low-key, relatively untouristed, mostly arid nation that enjoys some of Africa's greatest prosperity and political stability. They have very Low crime rate compared to other African countries. These lands were first inhabited by the San Bushmen some 30,000 years ago. After timely independence from England in 1966, they discovered three of the world's richest diamond-bearing formations. English & Setswana are their official language. Their unit of currency is the pula, meaning 'rain', which is divided into 100 thebe, meaning 'raindrops'. There were no peddlers. They had only onetelephone book including Yellow page in the entire nation, which was 2 cm thick. Its population is 1.8 million.
We toured the Northeast of the Chobe National Park, which was named after the Chobe River that forms the park's northern boundary. We had game drives in a 10-person safari vehicle, at 6 am and 10 am, each lasting 3 hours. This park is known to have Africa's largest elephant herds. During a sunset wildlife cruise on the Chobe River, we saw beautiful scenery and many animals.

XXI. 바오밥 나무. Baobab Tree.

바오밥 나무(Baobab tree)는 아프리카가 원산지로 아프리카를 상징하는 나무를 의미하게 되었습니다. 마다가스카르의 국가나무(National Tree)이기도 하지만 건조한 아프리카의 다른 나라에서도 볼 수 있습니다. 디즈니 월드의 애니멀 킹돔에서도 볼 수 있습니다.
바오밥은 낙엽 지는 큰키나무로, 일반적으로 20m까지 자랄 수 있지만, 옆으로 자라는 거로 보면 제일 큰 나무의 하나라고 합니다. 2,000년 가까이 산답니다. 이 곳 사람들은 이 나무의 '몽키 과일'을 따서 캔디나 음료수를 만드는데 쓰는 등 다른 곳에도 사용합니다. 또한 바오밥의 거의 모든 부분은 약용으로도 효과가 뛰어나다고 합니다. 동물들의 서식처도 되고, 기린은 이 나무의 잎을 좋아 합니다.
아프리카 사람들은 이 나무들을 신성하게 여기며, 지금도 도로를 만들 때 바오밥 나무가 있으면 나무를 베어 버리고 길을 만드는 것이 아니라 나무를 돌아서 길을 만드는 경우가 많이 있습니다. 아프리카의 여러 나라 전설에도 나옵니다. 어느 부족의 전설에 따르면 신이 실수로 바오밥 나무를 거꾸로 심어 뿌리가 하늘로 향하고 있는 것처럼 보인다고 합니다. "라이언 킹"에 나오는 '라피키'도 바오밥 나무에서 살고 있습니다. 라피키는 현명한 늙은 비비(baboon)인데, 그들의 주술의사 이기도 합니다.
The Baobab tree is a native tree in arid parts of Africa, and is the national tree of Madagascar. You can also see the Tree in Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom.
They are deciduous, shedding their leaves during the dry season. Some are reputed to be many thousands of years old. The Baobab grows to the height of a large maple tree but its lateral growth makes it one of the largest trees. Leafless and bare for much of the year, the baobab might be mistaken for dead. But this fascinating tree is very much alive, and is a tremendous resource.
People gather honey, pick fruit, called Monkey Fruit, for candy and drinks, strip the bark for baskets and rope, and use the roots for medicine. The leaves are used in their most common sauce. And, in times of drought, the tree has been uprooted for its source of water inside the swollen trunk.
All kinds of life share in the baobab's wealth. It provides shelter and food to an incredible variety of creatures. Birds make their homes in its hollows, bush babies and fruit bats drink nectar from its large white flowers, baboons feast on its fruit, and giraffes nibble its tender leaves.
The baobab is occasionally known colloquially as "upside-down tree" (from the Arabic legend which claims that the devil pulled out the tree and planted it upside down). This is likely derived from older African lore. The story goes that after creation, each of the animals was given a tree to plant and the stupid hyena planted the baobab upside-down! Rafiki, in The Lion King, makes his home in a baobab tree. Rafiki, the wise old baboon, is like a tribal medicine man or an ancient shaman.
