I. 아프리카 남부의 나라들 : 서론. Southern Africa: Introduction.

지난 2007년 4-5월에 17일간 여정으로 아프리카 남부의 여러지역을 다녀 올 기회가 있었습니다. 남아공의 요하네스버그, 케이프타운, 더반(콰줄루 나탈), 크루거 국립공원; 짐바브웨의 빅토리아 폭포; 보추와나의 쵸베 국립공원; 그리고 나미비아의 조그만 촌 동네를 방문하였습니다.
우리가 듣는 아프리카에 관한 소식은 별로 좋은 것이 많지 않습니다. 1) 정치적인 불안정, 계속되는 전쟁, 부족 들 간의 싸움; 2) 경제적인 불안정으로 비라도 제때에 오지 않으면 굶고 있는 어린아이들의 사진들을 보기도 합니다. 한 여인이 애를 평균 5을 낳는데 이는 세계에서 제일 높은 수자이며, 또한 유아 사망률도 세계에서 제일 높습니다. 현재의 아프리카 인구 9억(900 million)에서 2050년도에는 20억(2 billion)이 된다고 합니다. 3) 여러 가지 질환, 특히 HIV/AIDS는 세계 전체에 약 4,000만 (40 million)인데 이중 2,600만(26 million)명의 환자가 사하라 사막 남부의 아프리카에 살고 있습니다. HIV/AIDS가 아프리카에 만연 된 이유로는 i)정치가들이 이 병이 만연 된 것을 인정하지 않고, 이에 따라 국민들을 교육시킬 기회가 늦어젔고; ii) 인정한 후에는 한약으로 치료할 수 있다고 믿었고; iii) 남자들은 바람을 피우고; iv) 처녀와 성교를 하면 병이 치료된다고 생각하고; v) 약을 구하기가 힘들고; vi) HIV virus가 아프리카에서 시작되었다는 것들이 겠습니다.
반면에 우리가 다녀 온 곳에서는 다음의 것들을 할 수도 있었습니다. 4) 아프리카는 인류의 발생지입니다. 약 300만(3 million) 년 전에 오스트랄로피테쿠스(Australopithecus)라는 최초의 인류가 나타났고; 약 35,000 년 전에는 현대인과 거의 비슷한 호모사피엔스 사피엔스(슬기 슬기사람)인 산 민족( San people, 때로는 Bushmen)이 나타났습니다. 이들이 그린 암벽화가 있는데, 불행히도 볼 기회가 없었습니다. 5) 많은 부족들이 있지만 그 중에 줄루(Zulu)부족들을 보았습니다. 6)세계에서 가장 아름다운 도시의 하나인 케이프타운을 보고; 7) 세계 3대 폭포의 하나인 빅토리아 폭포를 볼 수 있었습니다. 무엇보다도 8) 사파리 (safari)를 하며 그 곳의 경치(풍경), 식물군, 그리고 동물들을 볼 수 있습니다.
아래에 있는 목록은 우리들이 다녀 온 나라들의 개인당 국민 총생산 (GDP per person), 행복지수(Happy Planet Index), 평균수명(life expectancy)들을 비교해 보았고; 우리가 방문하지는 않았지만 남아공내부에 있는 적은 왕국인 레소토(Lesotho), 스와질랜드(Swaziland)의 수치와 또한 한국과 미국의 통계도 넣어 보았습니다. 남부의 아프리카의 나라에서는 행복지수가 100이하인 나라가 하나도 없는 것을 보아 그다지 행복하지 못한 것 같습니다. 평균수명이 짧은데, 이는 HIV/AIDS때문입니다.

Southern Africa : Introduction:
For 17 days in April and May, 2007, we had chance to visit several places in Southern Africa: South Africa (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or Kwa Zulu Natal, Kruger National Park); Zimbabwe(Victoria Falls); Botswana(Chobe National Park); and Namibia( a small town).
Africa's most pressing concerns, yes, are political and economic and medical. 1) Due to political instability or corruption, there are wars going on. Child-soldiers carrying automatic weapons, lawless land invasions going unchecked by the authorities. 2) With their poverty, many people starve, whenever there are less crops harvested. Africa has the highest fertility rate of any continent or 5 children per woman and the highest infant mortality rate. Africa is expected to grow from 900 million people now to 2 billion by 2050(National Geographic Sept. 2005). 3) Number of peoples worldwide with HIV is about 40 millions, while the number in sub-Saharan Africa, 26 million. Or about 90% of the worldwide AIDS sufferers live in Africa. No. of HIV(+) South Africans is 5.3 million, more than any other country in the world. In Botswana, we see the highest infection rate : 22%. In all countries in Southern Africa, 10% or more of population lives with HIV/AIDS. Why there are so many HIV/AIDS in Africa? i) Politicians, including South Africa's president, did not acknowledge until recently that there were such diseases, ii)Once they knew, they advocated herbal treatments, iii) Men are promiscuous, iv)Misbelief that AIDS would be cured if they have sex with virgins, v)Treatments were not easily available, & vi)HIV viruses originated in Africa as animals and humans lived in a close proximity.
Nevertheless, there were so many unique aspects we wanted to do in Africa. 4) Africa is "cradle of humankind". About 3,000,000 BC, Australopithecus inhabited South Africa's plains. "Austral or Auster" means "south", while "pithecus"means "ape." About 35,000 BC, there were Homo sapiens sapiens. They were the ancestors of anatomically modern people.c. About 35,000 years ago, the San Bushmen had many rock-arts painted. We didn't have chance to see them. 5) We saw oneof the tribes, Zulu and Zulu culture; 6) There is Cape Town, oneof the world's most beautiful cities. 7) There is Victoria Falls, oneof the world's 3 great falls. 8) Most of all, we enjoyed a glimpse of dramatic landscape, and wildlife in natural settings. We hoped we could help them. A portion of our tour cost and spending into the local economy benefit economically by preserving habitats and wildlife. Every 8 tourists to a country creates one new job.
We summarized in the table, above, about GDP per person, Happy Planet Index and Life Expectancy in the countries we visited. Also, added, in the Table, Lesotho and Swaziland (2 small kingdoms inside South Africa), and Korea and U.S.A. None of the Southern African nations had Happy Planet Index below 100. They were not as happy. Surprisingly, Life Expectancy is quite low, one of the main reasons being HIV/AIDS.
