South America, Brazil, Rio: Christ, the Redeemer.

"Come to Me, all who labor and are heavily laden, & I will give you rest(Matthew 11:28)".
Overlooking Rio is the world-famous statue of Christ, the Redeemer, standing with his arms outstretiched atop Corcovado
or Hunchback Mountain(710 m, 2,330 ft).  Seeing the statue up close was really amazing.
We reached the top after a tram ride, elevator and then escalator.  The granite statue is visible day and night from most
parts of Rio.  The view of the city from here was astonishing.
The picture on left is Christ, and that on right is the scenery from the mountain.

Brail is the 5th largest nation on the planet after Russia, Canada, China and U.S.A.  Its population is about 178 million; Caucasian 55%, mixed race 38%, negroes 6%, and Asian 1%.  In 1500, a Portuguese explorer set foot to Brazil.  Eventually, the land takes the name "Brazil" after pau brasil(brazilwood), from which the Europeans extracted red dye.
In 1822, they became independent from Portugal.  The  Brazilian Empire, lasting between 1822 and 1889, had only 2 monarchs, Pedro I and Pedro II.  When the last slaves were freed in 1888, the military, like landlords, felt under-represented.  In 1889, Pedro II was overthrown by the military and exiled to France.  The beautiful building ( left ) was the place where Pedro II held the farewell party before he was exiled.  The picture (right) was the palace (now museum).

South America Brazil : Samba and Soccer.

Brazilians are some of the world's most musical, fun-loving people.  For them,  music, dance & drink are the main Carnival diversions in the frenzied street, the samba parade, etc.  Sex is not a taboo with Brazilians.  Esp. after the festival, many girls get pregnant.
Soccer is an all-consuming passion for millions of fans.  Maracana Stadium, the world's largest stadium, in Rio is able to seat 200,000 people.  Soccer is readily accessible to all with low expense.  It is a ticket out of poverty for many Brazilians.  Pele, one of the soccer's greatest players, was from a small city slum.  Brazil won the World Cup Title for a record fifth time.
The picture on the left shows "Carnival 2006", and the picture on the right was taken during the samba show.

South America Brazil : Meat and Coffee.

Almost daily, we ate meats & the drank Brazilian coffee.  The coffee was prepared so strong.
We added lots of sugar and lots of warm milk.  Decaffeinated coffee was generally unavailable.
They offered different parts of barbecued beaf.  We like best 8.Cupim and 9.Costela as in the picture.
South Amrica, Sao Paolo.

Sao Paolo is the New York of Latin America, and was named after St. Paul.  With 18 million inhabitants, it's the third largest city
on earth after New York and Tokyo.  It's the country's industrial & financial center, while it is saddled with teeming slums.
Its citizens work hard, while it's said that citizens in Rio de Janeiro keep playing.
Of Sao Paolo's important non-Caucasian populations, about 1 million are Japanese heritage.  They say there are Japanese beggars.
With another 100,000 of diverse Asians like Chinese, Koreans, there live about 45,000 Koreans.
When Koreans came first from 1959, they started selling their own "clothes".  Now, their main business appeared to be the Women's
garment industry.  Sure there are other industries for Koreans.  There are 47 Korean churches.
The picture on the left is "Av. Paulista", and that on the right is part of "Tokyo Town".

South America, Brazil, Rio De Janeiro.

Rio De Janeiro litterally means "river of January".  Rio was discovered on Jan 1, 1502 by Portuguese navigators, who mistook the entrance of
Guanabay Bay for the mouth of a river.  Hence, the name.
With its population of 6 million, it is the 2nd largest city in Brazil after Sao Paolo.  It is one of the 3 most beautiful harbours in the world (Napoli
in Italy, & Sydney in Australia); and has beautiful beaches like Copacabana, Ipanema, etc.  Today, the beach is not 'part of the life' of Rio, but
it is the 'life'.  A day in the beach has evolved from a tranquil family outing in to an all-encompassing cradle-to-grave life style of its own.
The pictures on the left and in the middle are parts of Rio, while that on the right is a contemporary building of a cathedral.
South America, Brazil, Rio's "Sugarloaf."

To the Portuguese, the Amerindian name, Pau-na-Acuqua sounded like pao de Acucar(sugarloaf), & its shape reminded
them of the clay molds used to refine sugar into a conical lump called a sugarloaf.  Thence, its name.  We went to the top
(396 meter) of granite sugarloaf mountain after riding cable-car twice.  The view from Sugarloaf was extraodinarily beartiful.
Here, 007 Movie Moonraker was filmed.
The hill was made up of a granite-gneiss rock unit, and was formed in a continental collision zone between South America
and Africa about 560 million years ago.
The picture on the left was taken in the hill; that on the right is "Gondwanaland" with S. America(d) and Africa(c) together.
South America : Brazil, Very Rich Man and Very Poor Man.

Brazil's GDP per head is $2,760(vs US $37,240 and S. Korea $12,690).  Brazil is one of the most unequal societies in the world.
The richest 1% of the population earns 12% of the country's income, while the poorest 50% earns just 10%.
A third of the population survive on under $l a day.
Only 5 other nations in the world - all in Africa - have greater income disparities.
Even the poor Brazilians save money ( if they can) mainly for the carnivals and soccer games.
The picture on the left shows a shanty town, while on the right, a busy and rich downtown of Sao Paolo.

South America, Brazil, Rio de Janeiro:

Here, in Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio, we saw a mythological figure.  If you look at carefully,
"The skirt - the waves of the sea",  "The curved waist - the beaches",  "The breast - the mountains",
"The hairs - the forests",  "The silhouette - the gracefulness of the woman"  stands at the foot of the
    statue of the ibis.
